This mountainous volcanic area extends for about two thirds of the island’s length from its northeast tip. Declared a Forest Reserve in 1776, this is the western hemisphere’s oldest protected rain forest, remaining totally natural for the most part. It is worth the while to take a pre-arranged guided tour of this rain forest where its forested mountains rise to approximately 580 metres. For bird watchers, this area is home to most of Tobago’s species of richly hued forest birds such as the White-tailed Sabrewing Hummingbird, Tobago Blue-backed Manakin, Rufous-tailed Jacamar, Olivaceous Woodcreeper, Yellow-legged Thrush, Blue-crowned Motmot and Collared Trogon, to name a few.
