A protected marine park covering 30 square miles located close to both Store Bay and Pigeon Point, daily tours on glass-bottomed boats or even snorkeling, allow reef life in this area to be viewed. Reef tour boats leave from Buccoo Bay, Store Bay and Pigeon Point. This natural aquatic wonder is rated the third most spectacular reef in the world, by Jacques Cousteau. The underwater world of the beautiful Buccoo Reef has colourful tropical fish species such as angel fish, parrot fish, butterfly fish among others, and rainbow-coloured coral formations. Watching the brightly coloured plants and sea shrubs in the lush coral gardens where both soft and hard coral species are found, is truly a soothing and relaxing experience.
If you like snorkeling, snorkel equipment is provided, to offer the opportunity to swim among exotic fish in the warm Caribbean Sea waters. One of the features of the reef is the beautiful Nylon Pool, which is a shallow, pure white sandy area in the middle of the sea where the water is crystal clear and rejuvenating; legend has it that a swim in this pool makes one 10 years younger. Here one can swim, walk along the seabed, or even float, while enjoying the picturesque views of the coast.
Glass Bottom Boat Tours can be arranged on the day or beforehand at Store Bay, Buccoo Beach or Pigeon Point. The average cost is between $70 TTD – $100 TTD per person and the boat usually leaves around 9 a.m. or 1 p.m.
