Measuring approximately 1976 hectares and located in Diego Martin, River Estate was the largest and most prestigious sugar estate. In order to power the rollers to crush the sugar cane from the Estate Lands, a cast iron water wheel was subsequently built in 1835, and the water for turning the wheel came from the nearby Diego Martin River. Located just across from the River Estate Museum, this is probably the only remaining complete water wheel in Trinidad.
