Running for a ¾ mile distance along the southern end of Port-of-Spain through Independence Square, this square was originally called Plaza de la Marina aka Marine Square. In 1962, however, Marine Square was renamed Independence Square, in honour of the country’s independence from the United Kingdom. Situated in the middle of the square is a statue of Captain Arthur Andrew Cipriani, who had fought in World War I in the British West India Regiment. Running through the centre of Independence Square, this promenade was laid out between 1993 and 1995.

Under the trees which line the promenade, individuals can be seen engaging in a game of chess or simply ‘liming’, amongst the hustle and bustle of town life. It also hosts free outdoor concerts, craft shows, film festivals and celebratory ceremonies. Named after Brian Lara, a Trinidadian West Indian cricketer who held the record score of 400 runs in a Cricket Test match, this promenade runs from the sea to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, and has a bronze statue of Brian Lara on its western end.
