Of Georgian and Gothic architecture mixed with elements of the Victorian Age, the Holy Trinity Cathedral which took 16 years to build was consecrated in 1823 and is one of the best known landmarks on Abercromby Street in Port-of-Spain. Made of local wood, the hammer-beam roof is characterized by huge trusses while the alter is built entirely of mahogany, alabaster and marble, mounted on Portland stone.
Magnificent representations of the saints are showcased in the stained glass windows and the cathedral is filled with interesting historical items such as a marble statue, dedicated to former governor and founder of the church Sir Ralph Woodford. In memory of British elite of colonial days, tablets are mounted along the walls of the cathedral. As the first Anglican Church in Trinidad, this was originally built to cater for the British on the island. Tours of the Cathedral are on Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
